Documentation

Documentation is the organized collection of written materials that explain how a product, service, or process works, including user guides, API references, and technical specifications.

In Depth

Good documentation is the foundation of both self-service support and AI agent performance. It encompasses several types: user documentation (how to use the product), developer documentation (API references, SDKs, integration guides), internal documentation (SOPs, runbooks, architecture docs), and release documentation (changelogs, migration guides). The quality of documentation directly impacts support ticket volume — clear, comprehensive docs reduce the need for customers to contact support.

For AI agents, documentation is the primary knowledge source that determines response quality. Documentation best practices include keeping content up-to-date with every release, using consistent terminology, providing code examples and screenshots, maintaining clear navigation, and gathering feedback to identify gaps. AI is increasingly used to auto-generate documentation from code, keep docs synchronized with product changes, and translate documentation into multiple languages.
